Western State Hospital was originally constructed over 100 years ago. The majority of its adult patient care facilities are outdated and no longer support their standards for mental healthcare and treatment programs. architecture+ was a key member of the team that developed the Campus Master Plan and subsequently provided pre-design services for a new modern forensic hospital.

Campus Master Plan
The Campus Master Plan encompasses an 800+ bed campus providing adult, child, and adolescent mental health services. In a later engagement pre-design services were provide for a new 350-500 bed forensic hospital. These pre-design services became the basis for a capital budget request that was approved by the Governor in January and is now before the legislature for consideration during the Spring of 2021.
 
Center of Forensic Excellence
The Center of Forensic Excellence is envisioned as a workplace of choice for mental health care workers that will also help to eliminate the negative view and stigma of the hospital and improve the relationship between the hospital’s visitors, patients, and local community. During pre-design, we worked with the client to examine program and site options and provide a cost analysis of the preferred option.
