Viking Child Care Center

The Viking Child Care Center serves the children of students and staff at Hudson Valley Community College. The Faculty Student Association, which runs the facility, retained architecture+ to design the conversion and layout of the playground and all associated exterior spaces. Interior finishes include casework, security/access systems, and flooring. Components such as countertops with changing tables, hand sinks, and food preparation areas were selected to serve as natural room dividers without restricting the teachers' view of classroom activities. The facility, at 16,000 square feet, accommodates 128 children in 10 classrooms (4 infant, 4 toddler, and 2 preschool). Other features include 2 enclosed playgrounds (1 infant/toddler, 1 preschool), 10 multiuse classrooms for college/community use, and a fully equipped kitchen. This project was honored with an award for Outstanding Architecture from the Education Design Showcase, School Planning & Management.
