architecture+ provided design, interior design, and construction administration services for the renovation of this 10,000 square foot library on the Albany Campus of The Sage Colleges. The Sage Colleges made an institutional decision to integrate academic and other student support services into the third floor of the building to improve access to these services. The academic support services included offices for disability, HEOP, and academic services. The design incorporated testing rooms, a seminar room, and math and writing laboratories to support student needs for tutoring and adaptive testing.
An information commons was created on the first floor by introducing a computing and printing destination adjacent to a new centralized circulation desk. The adjacent café, offering a light menu, soft seating, and current periodicals, introduced a new social hub within the library. The print collection was reorganized on the first and second floors to create study nooks along the edge and allow natural light into the stacks as well as visual connections across the stacks. These changes created more welcoming and less institutional feel to the library.
The renovations included finish upgrades, the introduction of air conditioning, accessibility improvement, and window replacement. Our team coordinated with the foodservice provider, Sodexo, to integrate the café design into the library interior design.
Design began in early 2009. Our team worked closely with the campus facilities management, library representatives, and the general contractor to move through the design quickly and facilitate construction completion by August, 2009.
